The image painted on the base grid is the relevant 17.2 kly x 17.2 kly section of the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map. The smallest circle around the Sun has a radius of 750 light years, the larger circle a radius of 5000 light years. The base grid parallels the galactic plane, and lies 0.42 thousand light years (kly) below the actual galactic plane.
