The image painted on the base grid is the relevant 2,271 ly x 2,271 ly section of the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map. The base grid parallels the galactic plane, and lies 374 light years below the actual galactic plane. The large circle centered around the Sun has a radius of 750 light years.
