The image painted on the base grid is the relevant 6,262 ly x 6,262 ly section of the NASA Milky Way map. The small circle in the image is the smallest circle centered around the Sun in the NASA Milky Way map, a circle with a radius of 750 light years. The larger arc in the image is a portion of the circle in the NASA Milky Way map with radius 5,000 light years around the Sun. The base grid parallels the galactic plane, and lies 295 light years below the actual galactic plane. 3 Puppis is far more distant than the other bright stars of Puppis; see below for a view of Puppis without 3 Puppis.
