Messier Objects in the Milky Way Excluding Globular Clusters
The image painted on the base grid is the relevant 16.3 kly x 16.3 kly section of the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map. The smallest circle around the Sun has a radius of 750 light years, the larger circle a radius of 5,000 light years. The base grid parallels the galactic plane, and lies 0.59 thousand light years (590 light years) below the actual galactic plane.
