The partial circle at the edge of the image is the smallest circle centered around the Sun in the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map, a circle with a radius of 750 light years. The base grid parallels the galactic plane, and lies 159 light years below the actual galactic plane. b Velorum is far more distant than the other bright stars of Vela; see below for a view of Vela without b Velorum.
