The image painted on the base grid is the relevant 2,366 ly x 2,366 ly section of the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map. The arc in the image is a portion of the smallest circle centered around the Sun in the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map, a circle with a radius of 750 light years. The base grid parallels the galactic plane, and lies 226 light years below the actual galactic plane. ι1 Scorpii is far more distant than the other bright stars of Scorpius; see below for a view of Scorpius without ι1 Scorpii.
