The image painted on the base grid is the relevant 818 ly x 818 ly section of the NASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map. The white arc in the image is a small portion of the smallest circle centered around the Sun in the NNASA/JPL-Caltech Milky Way map, a circle with a radius of 750 light years. The base grid lies along the actual galactic plane.
